Acer palmatum Bi hoo boasts spectacular, colourful foliage that provides dramatic autumn colour. The stems are particularly vibrant in winter, providing interest all year round. This fantastic acer will produce leaves with a salmon pink flush to them, which in time turn to shades of yellow and orange before falling in autumn. Perfect for growing in a large container or as a focal point in garden displays. Pot up acer plants and grow them on in cool frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside in their final positions. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them in borders outdoors. Grow acer trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively grow acers in large containers using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
