Acer palmatum 'Starfish' is ideal for adding dramatic colour in autumn to your garden. The unique starfish -like foliage is very unique and eye-catching. The red colour of the leaves intensifies as you move into the autumn months, before working through a number of different shades before falling. Perfect for a small garden thanks to its slow and upright growth habit. Grow acer trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively grow acers in large containers using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
