Cornus sericea ‘Flaviramea’ is a fabulous staple in any garden, with lush foliage providing structure and also a lovely leafy backdrop to flowering plants, followed by impressive autumn foliage colour. When the leaves fall, they reveal the bright yellow-green stems which provide colour and structure to the garden throughout winter. To appreciate the bright stems to their fullest, plant this shrub in front of a dark evergreen for contrast. It also looks brilliant underplanted with spring-flowering bulbs. During spring, this Dogwood also produces its own flowers, which are white and borne in tight clusters and also attract bees. This low-maintenance shrub is very versatile, responding very well to a hard prune to maintain a more compact size and also the most striking stem colour. Alternatively, you can let it grow to its full height and use it to provide added privacy to your garden. Grow Cornus plants in any well drained soil. Choose a position in full sun. Feed and water dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, they will require less attention. To encourage plenty of colourful stems, Dogwood will need regular pollarding in early spring. Cut back all dogwood stems to 3 buds above soil level or to a permanent low framework. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant after pruning. Caution: Dogwood berries are harmful if eaten. Irritant to skin and eyes.
