Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’, commonly known as Japanese Blood Grass, is a neat and compact ornamental grass ideal for growing in small spaces. It loves a sunny spot but can also tolerate semi-shade and adds a wonderful fiery glow to any planting scheme. Providing a long season of interest, the striking red foliage emerges bright green in the spring, then develops its bright red tips as the season progresses and it’s at its brightest during the summer months. Whether planted in pots or mixed borders, the vivid upright foliage provides a wonderful, structural contrast when planted among mixed flowers or other ornamental grasses. This deciduous grass is low maintenance and easy to grow, simply requiring cutting back in the spring. To give them to best start, pot up plants and grow them on in frost free conditions or warm, sheltered spot for transplanting into beds, borders and containers later on in the spring. Water sparingly until plants are fully rooted into their containers. Plant Japanese Blood Grass in moist, light, well-drained soil in full sun. Water when necessary to prevent the soil from drying out. Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’ is fairly hardy and will tolerate a typical UK winter, however if you live in a particularly cold or exposed area it’s a good idea to apply a thick layer of mulch over the plants to offer a little extra protection.
