Sambucus nigra f.porphyrophylla Eva is versatile and easily grown in most conditions, although full sun will produce the best leaf colour. This hardy, deciduous shrub makes an attractive addition to borders, woodlands and wildlife gardens. This striking Elder boasts finely-cut, dark burgundy leaves that turn to vibrant red in autumn. The eye-catching foliage contrasts beautifully with the fragrant pink flowers that are borne in profusion from early summer. As summer ends, the flowers are replaced by glossy black fruits which are loved by birds. Grow Black Lace nigra f.porphyrophylla Eva in any moist but well-drained soil in full sun or dappled shade, plants will also survive on poor, chalky soils. Sambucus plants require very little pruning except for general maintenance and shaping in winter. However, if they become too large after a few years, they will also respond well to hard, restrictive pruning. Caution: Irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
