Clematis 'Ville de Lyon' is one of the late, large flowering clematis varieties, producing a vibrant and long-lasting display of deep purple-red blooms. Flowers appear from mid-summer and continue into autumn, making it a reliable choice for extending seasonal colour. Ideal for growing in patio pots, trained against walls or fences, or at the back of a border to add height and drama. Plant clematis deeply in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, setting the crown 7. 5cm (3) below soil level to encourage strong basal growth. Clematis dislike very wet or very dry soils, so enrich with compost or well-rotted manure as needed. Suitable for both garden borders and large patio containers with a soil-based compost. Train onto trellis, wires, or climbing frames, and feed and water generously through the growing season. Mulch in spring to protect roots and retain soil moisture. Pruning group 3: Cut back all stems in spring to a pair of healthy buds around 20cm (8) above ground level, as this variety flowers on the current seasons growth. Images shown are for guidance only and show the expected results of plants upon maturity. Different growing conditions might vary results. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e. g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months). Decorative pots are not supplied.
